When you reboot your Windows XP computer after converting from FAT 32 file system to NTFS file system, the system may not start and display certain error messages regarding missing system files. Such Windows XP behavior makes all your critical files inaccessible and may cause serious file loss. In order to retrieve your lost files and fix this issue, you should opt for File Recovery Software.

After converting your Windows XP file system from FAT 32 to NTFS using "convert drive: /fs:ntfs" command, the following error message may get displayed after you restart the system:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32DriversNtfs.sys."

Along with this error message, you may also face the following issues:

System crash occurs when you try to boot the system using Windows XP disk.

Safe Mode is not able to get rid of the driver file related crash.

Restoring the system to Last Known Good Configuration is not able to solve the isse.

Attaching the drive to a healthy computer with Windows XP operating system causes system crash while reading the drive.

Such Windows XP behavior makes your system inaccessible and causes serious file loss situations. To reclaim your precious data, you need to find out the cause of this problem and carry out File Recovery using third party applications.

Grounds of the issue:

The reason behind the above problem is missing or corrupt ntfs.sys file. This is the main driver file of NTFS file system. After corruption of ntfs.sys, file system becomes unusable and thus operating system can not recognize hard drive partitions or volumes.

Resolution

To fix this issue, follow the below steps:

Boot the system from Windows XP disk and enter Recovery Console.

Type following commands at command prompt:

Drive letter:windowssystem32drivers [Press ENTER]

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old [Press ENTER]

At command prompt, type following command:

copy Drive letter:i386ntfs.sys drive:windowssystem32drivers

Quit Recovery Console and reboot the system.

If the system boots properly, it means that the problem has been resolved. But, if you get the same error message again, then you should format the hard drive partition and go for a clean reinstall of the operating system to resolve this issue.

Formatting the partition can help you in resolving such issues, but it erases all the data from the hard drive and result as critical file loss situations. In such cases,  file recovery  software can recover your lost or inaccessible data.
